Let's help families in need with FAROL
FAROL is a beautiful volunteer project helping local families in need, of which there are way more than you might think. Founded by the parishes of Ericeira and Carvoeira, they provide daily food distribution, hospital transport, tutoring, legal support, and even help people find jobs and homes. They also run a little shop near Jogo da Bola, where donated items are sold to raise funds for their amazing work. Helping out FAROL will directly impact the lives of many fellow Ericeirians.
Oh, and don’t worry if your Portuguese isn’t perfect—FAROL is used to working with international volunteers!
How you can help FAROL:
Prepare care boxes
Every day, FAROL prepares special care boxes for families in need. These boxes are filled with food and essentials and delivered daily to those who need them most. You’re joining a small team of volunteers to help pack and distribute the care boxes. You don’t have to show up every day, once a week would be fine too!
When: every day
Time: 15:00 - 17:00
Where: Salão Paroquial Ericeira
Stand at Intermarché
Once a month, FAROL sets up a stand at the entrance of the Intermarché supermarket. They hand out small shopping lists with essential items for families in need to shoppers that enter the supermarket. They can choose to buy and donate some of these items when they leave the store. You’re part of a small team handing out the lists and collecting the donations.
When: One weekend a month (this monthL 21/22/23 feb)
Time: 2 hours
Where: Intermarché Ericeira
Receive goods from the Food Bank
Every month FAROL receives non perishable goods from the Food Bank: cooling oil, rice, canned food etc. They need help unpacking these goods from the truck and putting them in the storage.
When: once a month on Wednesday or Thursday
Time: 11:30
Where: Salão Paroquial Ericeira
Collecting goods
FAROL gets a lot of their donated goods from local shops, restaurants and even schools. They need help with collecting these goods. So if you have a car and some spare time you could help with one of these activities:
- Collect goods from Intermarché (Daily at 08:00 or 22:00)
- Collect food from Churrasqueira da Vila (Daily 11:00 or 17:00)
- Collect food from local schools (occasionally)
- Collect bread form the Pao e Chorizo stand at Carvoeira (occasionally)
- Bring care boxes to families (Daily at 18:00)
If you offer to help, you will be contacted by FAROL. You can tell them what you can do and how much time you can spare.
